We caught up with Infant Learning Company, about about what to expect from this top-tier company at this year’s Baby Show!
What’s your company about and what’s new this year?
We help parents learn how to talk to babies and toddlers to enhance their children’s language skills. Infant researcher Dr. Robert Titzer’s Guide to Early Learning is included with all purchases. In the US, we directly teach parents how to talk to their babies and we provide tools to help their babies learn. In many countries we train preschool and nursery teachers and administrators about how to apply scientific principles to improve children’s language learning.
Early language learning has long-term effects on a child’s later language abilities and brain development. For example, babies who are in better language environments in the first 18 months of life understand more words than babies who are in poorer language environments where fewer words are spoken (Fernald, Marchman, & Weisleder, 2012). In addition, babies who are in better language environments also have faster brain processing speeds than the other babies. Brain processing speed and early language abilities are “fundamental to intellectual functioning” (Marchman & Fernald, 2008). The early language environment has lasting effects. A recent study found that language scores at age 2 predict reading scores at age 15 (Eklund, Torppa, Sulkunen, Niemi, & Ahonen, 2018).
We are here to help parents teach their babies language skills. One important concept that parents don’t teach to their babies is called the shape bias. Babies who are taught the shape bias learn words at a faster rate than babies who are not taught this important concept. The shape bias is the tendency of infants and children (as well as adults) to generalize information about an object by its shape, rather than its color, material, or texture when learning nouns. Please think about a cup. The shape of the cup tells you the important information about its function. The color, material, texture, or size of the cup is not as important as far as figuring out the category for the object. Our new Shape Bias Language Cards are designed to help babies learn this important skill. Once infants are taught that the shapes are more important, then they learn new words at a much faster rate.
