For someone unfamiliar with Jaq Jaq Bird, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Jaq Jaq Bird makes beautiful products that nurture creativity and joy in the hearts of children. Our chalk books and Butterstix™ Zero Dust Chalk™ provide both outlet and encouragement for little minds to discover the joy of creation… and with all the leeway needed to “start over” without consuming endless sheets of paper! We are happy to provide a welcome alternative to electronic options to keep little minds active and creating, and our winsome prints and designs continue to delight kids and parents wherever Jaq Jaq Bird is found.
Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
The owner of Jaq Jaq Bird, Grace Paik, is a military mom who started designing and sewing products in her home, first for her three kids and then for folks who began noticing her designs. However, it wasn’t until a situation where she was faced with the challenge of turning lemons into lemonade, that people started to really notice how she was “meeting needs with beautiful design.”
Having fallen victim to an FBI-wanted con artist who ran off with the funds for a rehab project in the Paik home, Grace was faced with a gutted kitchen and three young children to attend to. What resulted from the subsequent and constant eating out was the need to keep her children occupied at the restaurants that became her family’s temporary dining room – a reusable placemat that served as a chalkboard with a colorful print sewn to the back. After the Wall Street Journal picked up the story, the rest is history.
The most recent version of that early chalk mat is our chalk book, which is sold on every continent except for Antarctica. We think penguins prefer paints to our Butterstix.
What are the most popular and/or newest products from Jaq Jaq Bird?
By far, our most popular products are our chalk books and Butterstix™.
Our Doodle It™ chalk books provide the perfect “blank slate” for children 3-6 yrs to write and illustrate their own stories. Our Color It™ coloring books not only supply dinosaurs and astronauts to color, but also the masterpieces of Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas to mimic and learn from. Both chalk books feature:
· Premium, hand-stitched build with a patent-pending binding that lies flat at every page.
· Easy to clean pages that are colorfully trimmed to look pleasing to the eye as well as aid little fingers turn the page
· Portable at 8 inches by 8 inches, our chalk books feature a pouch designed to keep chalk from falling out when closed and traveling
· BPA-free and phthalate-free, our chalk books come with 4 color pieces of our Butterstix™ chalk
Our Butterstix™ Zero Dust Chalk™ provides the perfect writing/drawing implement for our chalk books.
· Versatile – the effect is like chalk, but writes like a crayon, and blends (on paper) like a pastel. If used on non-porous surfaces, Butterstix™ erase with just a damp cloth or paper towel. Comes in 8 colors.
· Zero Dust™ – our chalk also does not smudge like regular chalk. Best when used with our Chalk Holder, Butterstix™ can also be sharpened to create fine lines.
· Safe for kids – our chalks are non-toxic and have passed rigorous testing to be sold in the EU.
What sets Jaq Jaq Bird apart in the children’s art products marketplace?
What sets us apart from the marketplace is to bring together beautiful, innovative design and new uses for older, proven technology. We are decidedly low-tech. It’s not that we don’t love technology; we just want to hold off introducing our tablets and phones to the youngest of us for a few precious years. When we see a child clutching a Doodle It™ and guarding its secrets within, we are well pleased and certain that that child has discovered a joy that all children need.
What can parents expect from Jaq Jaq Bird at the Chicago Baby Show?
We will be displaying our core products with demo tables for both “big” and little children. Folks will also be able to purchase product at a show discount.
