To learn more about Musical Magic, we spoke with Katie Jeep, the company’s owner. For someone unfamiliar with Musical Magic, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?
Musical Magic specializes in creating joy! We have been in operation in Roscoe Village since September 2002. We offer music and movement exploration classes for children aged newborn through four and their families and caregivers. The business was founded on the idea that children can find confidence and creativity in self-expression through music, and we’ve been helping little ones find their rhythm ever since!
Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved since then?
Musical Magic has been rock ’n rollin’ with families for almost 15 years. Owner, Katie Jeep, began working as one of Musical Magic’s music teachers in 2010 and took over operations in 2011. Within her first year of ownership, in addition to the adjustment of running a business, she planned a wedding, got married and became pregnant! Luckily, she figured out how to navigate starting a family and growing a business at the same time by assembling a small staff of wonderfully friendly and engaging instructors and administrators. Everyone brings their own gifts, talents and insight to the job, and Musical Magic has truly grown and evolved because of that. What are the most popular and/or newest classes from Musical Magic?
Our music classes are popular and designed to be adult/child interactive. Our unique programs are divided into the following age groups: Boogyin’ Babies (newborn–12 months); Pip Squeaks (12–24 months); Tappin’ Toddlers (2–3 years); and Mixed Medley (newborn–four-years-old) perfect for siblings, but all are welcome!
Each class begins with a circle-time welcome song, with a teacher leading the musical journey and setting the pace for the class. After the initial welcome, the children are encouraged to interact with the environment. They spend time exploring the colorful, muraled studio, meeting and greeting the various stuffed animals, and learning how to shake a tambourine to the beat! Also, for so many children, our classes are their first social environment–we love being able to provide families with a safe, positive, and entertaining atmosphere where kids interact and socialize freely with other young children, set to a singable soundtrack!
What sets Musical Magic apart from other music classes for children?
Musical Magic is truly set apart by the community it cultivates for the families and children who attend. All of our staff and teachers are friendly, outgoing, and curious–we love getting to know the families that join us, and hearing about milestone achievements and silly stories from home truly brightens our lives. Our active participation with Musical Magic families in our studio also opens the door for parents and caregivers to swap stories, share advice, and get to know each other better. Over the years, Musical Magic really has become a neighborhood hub for connecting local families–we wouldn’t have it any other way.
