To learn more about Oy Vey Baby, we spoke with Susan Nightingale, the company’s founder.

For someone unfamiliar with Oy Vey Baby, how would you describe the company’s mission and core offerings?

Our mission is simple — to pass on our Jewish legacy with style and joy. Our motto is:

Yiddishkeit. Pass it on. Beautifully.

We create charming gifts of quality newborn garments that have sweet Yiddish sentiments printed on them. All of our sets or individual garments come fully gift wrapped — either in organza bags or keepsake boxes. We call our products “giftables.” They also include Mazel Tov enclosure cards. All the customer needs to do is buy a gift, sign the card and take it to a baby shower, maternity ward, a bris or home visit to see the new baby.

Tell us about the company’s background. When did it start and how has it evolved?

We’re a “baby” company so to speak. We are just now getting selling under way. Its taken about 6-8 months to put the whole operation together. I’d like to think we’re at the walking stage, babywise. But we’ve already opened our website to consumers, and we also sell our products wholesale to synagogue gift shops, hospital gift shops and Judaica stores.

Oy Vey Baby began when I was looking to buy some special gifts for my sister’s new grandson. I saw that something like this was missing in the marketplace. I guess my age (almost 60!) finally worked in my favor. I knew what I wanted to buy as a future grandmother, or bubbie, as we say in Yiddish, and I assumed they would appeal to other bubbies and zadies, or grandfathers. And mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends too!

I think you discover the best, most truest things in your own backyard.

What are the most popular and/or the newest products from Oy Vey Baby?

We’ve started with our Bubbalah Collection. Bubbalah is an endearment in Yiddish. It’s been called the sweetest of all sweet endearments. It’s actually difficult to define in words, but it’s a combination of “sweetheart,” “darling,” “dearest,” and a great big, warm hug from your mother or grandmother.

I’ve also remembered the feeling that was evoked when my mother put my face in her hands and called me Bubbalah. I felt completely and utterly safe. I’m sure it stirs up the same emotions in other people too.

Our other design right now is “Mohel Approved” set which includes a gown and little striped hat. The saying is sweet and wry and we think it will make everyone smile who sees it. And I’m sure that there’s nothing comparable to it in the marketplace — how many “Bris” gifts have you seen?

We have also commissioned home knitters in the US and UK who lovingly craft charming hand knit hats and booties that can be bought separately or to accompany our sets. I don’t think there’s anyone who can resist these booties and hats when then they see them (and touch them) — and they are all crafted from soft yarns that match our line.

We will be rolling out many new designs as time goes on; all funny, charming, nostalgic and beautiful!

What sets Oy Vey Baby apart in the baby marketplace?

I think it’s our design aesthetic. A lot of clothing that have Yiddish sayings on them are down market. Not us — we’re aiming for a sweet, elegant aesthetic. Our fabrics are soft to the touch, the colors are pastel and the designs on them are charming. And another way we are different from other products in the marketplace is that we’re fully “giftable.” We put together newborn layette pieces and then package them beautifully, in organza bags or keepsake boxes with ribbons and enclosure cards. Just how everyone would like to give a gift but without the work. We do it for you!

What can parents expect from Oy Vey Baby at the Chicago Baby Show?

Fun. Smiles. Laughter. As we say in Yiddish “Nu?” So — you need to know more? Come visit us at Booth #722!!
